What Is the Cumberland Falls Moonbow?

A moonbow is essentially a rainbow created by moonlight instead of sunlight.

At Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin, Kentucky, mist rising from Cumberland Falls combines with bright moonlight under the right conditions to create this unusual nighttime phenomenon.

Cumberland Falls itself is spectacular. The waterfall measures approximately 68 feet high and 125 feet wide and is often called the “Niagara of the South.”

But seeing it beneath a bright moon is an entirely different Kentucky experience.

The moonbow is visible only when conditions cooperate. You need sufficient moonlight, mist from the falls, darkness, and relatively clear skies, so there is never a guarantee that visitors will see it.
